There's an argument that the best way to understand a spirit is to drink it slowly and well, with intention, alongside someone who can explain exactly why it tastes the way it does. That's the philosophy behind Teremana Tequila's Liquid Education Experience, which arrived in Johannesburg this week, with a guest list that included media, hospitality professionals, and genuine agave enthusiasts.
Hosted at Truffles on the Park in Sandton, the immersive evening took guests on a sensory journey from the Jalisco Highlands, where blue agave plants are slow-roasted in small, traditional brick ovens, to the custom copper pot stills that define Teremana's clean, additive-free profile.
The name carries meaning: terra, from the earth, and mana, spirit. It's a combination that the brand takes seriously, and the tasting experience was designed to make guests feel that connection firsthand.
Three expressions formed the backbone of the evening. The Blanco bright, clean, with crisp agave notes and no harsh finish, is the entry point and the cocktail bartender's canvas. The Reposado, rested in oak barrels, introduces warmth: vanilla and oak weaving through the agave brightness without overwhelming it. And the Añejo, aged longer for depth and complexity, is tequila at its most considered, the kind of pour that rewards patience and a proper glass.
What distinguished the evening was its emphasis on education over entertainment. Guests left not just with a preference, but with a framework and understanding of why Teremana tastes the way it does, and what makes the craft behind it distinct.
The mana has arrived in Mzansi. It's here to stay.
