Babylonstoren Brings the Cape Winelands to Hyde Park Corner

Babylonstoren Brings the Cape Winelands to Hyde Park Corner

There's a particular kind of Cape Winelands calm that's hard to replicate anywhere else — and for 13 days this September, Hyde Park Corner is giving it a genuine attempt. Babylonstoren in Bloom, running from 2 to 14 September in the centre's Centre Court, marks the celebrated Franschhoek farm's first-ever activation inside a shopping centre, and it's a considerably more ambitious undertaking than a simple pop-up stand.

Likers of Things

The centrepiece of the installation is a direct homage to Babylonstoren's most recognisable garden feature: the farm's 70-metre Puff Adder walkway, a dome-lattice-covered path that runs along a stream on the farm and shifts its planting scheme with the seasons winter aloes giving way to spring clivias, which in turn give way to summer roses, berries and bonsai. The Hyde Park Corner interpretation captures that same seasonal logic on a compressed, urban scale, bringing the sensation of walking through Babylonstoren's gardens into the middle of a Johannesburg shopping day.

Spring, appropriately, means clivias and this activation carries a genuine first for South African horticulture. Displayed alongside the installation is The Hyde Park Double, the country's first-ever double clivia, bred by independent grower André Swart specifically in connection with this event. It's a rare instance of a shopping centre activation producing something with actual botanical significance beyond the marketing calendar.

Beyond the floral display, the activation functions as a genuine retail experience: visitors can sample and purchase from Babylonstoren's full lifestyle range bath and body products, home fragrance, linen, décor, honey, pantry staples and wine much of it made using ingredients or materials sourced directly from the farm's own gardens. It's less a curated selection of Babylonstoren-branded goods and more a genuine cross-section of what the farm actually produces.

"Babylonstoren has such a distinctive sense of place that people recognise immediately, whether through its gardens, its food or the beautiful products that come from the farm," says Hyde Park Corner General Manager Tevye Block. "Bringing a taste of that experience to Johannesburg gives our customers something genuinely special to discover at Hyde Park Corner this spring. Made for the Season is also about the pleasure of discovering what is new as we move into spring... we want people to come in, explore and enjoy everything happening throughout the centre."

That broader spring push extends well beyond Centre Court. South African lifestyle label Freedom of Movement opens its Hyde Park Corner store on 3 September with a full range of footwear, apparel, bags and accessories. From 1 September, RedLine Paris opens its first-ever African boutique at the centre a contemporary fine jewellery house known for refined, minimalist pieces designed to be layered and collected, now expanding into Johannesburg after growth across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the US. Elsewhere in the centre, Moss debuts its garden-inspired Mii à Table collection, La Corset brings in the latest Pain de Sucre swimwear, and Avenue 2A the exclusive South African stockist of Brunello Cucinelli fragrance showcases the Italian house's scent collection.

Babylonstoren in Bloom runs during normal Hyde Park Corner trading hours through 14 September. Full details at hydeparkcorner.co.za.

There's a particular kind of magic in walking into a small office and being greeted with proper coffee not the instant sachet apology, not the temperamental pod machine that's clearly seen better days, but the real thing.
