Red Bull Half Court Is Back

Red Bull Half Court Is Back

South African basketball has never lacked flair, it's always lacked a big enough stage

Likers of Things

Red Bull Half Court is fixing that for a second straight year, with team registration now open for a run that ends, for the lucky few, on a plane to Manila.

The format is basketball stripped down to its purest, most nerve-shredding form: 3-on-3, half a court, ten minutes on the clock or first to 21 points, whichever comes first. There's no room to coast through a slow quarter here, every possession counts, and Red Bull's signature "Own the Court" bonus raises the stakes further, handing the highest-scoring team in each group a spot in the next round regardless of their win-loss record. It's a format built for exactly the kind of high-flair, high-pressure basketball South Africa already plays on its own terms.

And that's really the heart of this competition. From the blacktops of Soweto to the school courts of the Cape Flats and the floodlit slabs of KwaMashu, streetball here has never just been about the scoreboard it's the music, the outfits, the dance, the crowd pressed against the fence reacting to every crossover. When the first National Final packed out Wits University last September, the swagger mattered just as much as the final whistle. Red Bull Half Court simply hands that culture a global platform.

The infrastructure is already in place to support it. South Africa runs a professional men's and women's league through the Basketball National League, fields a club in the continental Basketball Africa League, and has a growing generation of young players who learned the game online before rebuilding it on concrete. The talent has been here. The pipeline is finally catching up to it.

The road to Manila runs through three city qualifiers before the National Final:

KwaZulu-Natal:1 August, Durban

University of Technology Gauteng: 2 August, Emeris Sandton

Western Cape :7 August, University of Cape Town

National Final: 22 August, Johannesburg

From there, the men's and women's champions earn the right to wear the South African flag at the Red Bull Half Court World Final in Manila, The Philippines, on 5 December 2026.

Teams of three to four players can register now at www.redbull.com/halfcourt. The fine print is worth knowing: every player must be 18 or older, at least three players per team must be South African residents, and there are no substitutions once game day starts — so choose your squad with intention. Check-in opens 90 minutes before tip-off.

Spectating is free, but spots are limited, so early arrival is the move. This is the kind of event where the crowd is half the show.
