Red Bull Box Cart Race Returns to Sandton This October

On Sunday, 4 October 2026, Sandton Drive trades traffic for pure chaos as the Red Bull Box Cart Race returns to Johannesburg. Teams of amateur engineers will send homemade, engine-free carts hurtling down the hill in a spectacle that blends motorsport with street theatre part race, part elaborate costume drama, part glorious wipeout reel.

The format is simple in premise and anything but in execution: teams haul their hand-built creations to the top of the ramp dressed in outlandish costumes pirates, superheroes, a giant potjie pot, a runaway bathtub and perform a skit to win over judges and crowd alike before letting gravity take the wheel. Carts are scored on speed, creativity and showmanship, meaning the fastest machine doesn't always take the win; the crowd favourite, more often than not, is the one held together by nothing but hope and duct tape.

This year's field includes first-time entrants Kwik Kwik Nauw Nauw, powered by Takealot, who are chasing the title with a delivery-inspired performance and a "standout design." For returning team Noma Yini, the race is about more than competition: "We want to show that we belong in spaces like this, bringing the spirit of the kasi, the hustle and the ability to make something out of nothing," the team says.

South Africa remains the only African nation to host the event, with recent editions on Cape Town's Bo-Kaap streets drawing crowds of more than 22,000. The reigning champions, Stellenbosch's Potjie Boytjies, took the 2025 crown aboard a potjie-pot-on-wheels proof that the best story usually wins the day.

There's a particular kind of Cape Winelands calm that's hard to replicate anywhere else — and for 13 days this September, Hyde Park Corner is giving it a genuine attempt. Babylonstoren in Bloom, running from 2 to 14 September in the centre's Centre Court, marks the celebrated Franschhoek farm's first-ever activation inside a shopping centre, and it's a considerably more ambitious undertaking than a simple pop-up stand.

Some community events grow by accident. The Pink Run at Rosebank Mall has grown by design and the numbers tell the story clearly. What started as a modest gathering of around 900 people in 2023 pulled in 3,100 participants last year, raising R66,000 for CANSA in the process. This year, organisers aren't just hoping to build on that they've set an explicit, public target: 3,500 runners and R100,000 raised for this year's beneficiary, breast health organisation I Love Boobies.

There was a time when Strictly Soul was, at its core, a night out a well-curated evening built around a shared love of R&B. That era is officially over. What's replaced it is something closer to a cultural infrastructure project: a platform spanning cities, formats and now continents, all built on the same founding idea that R&B deserves the kind of dedicated, considered stage that other genres have long taken for granted.
