Fabric returns to Johannesburg and Cape Town in January with a line-up of debutants and one very welcome homecoming. There are club nights, and then there is fabric. The London institution is heading back to South Africa for two shows in January 2027, in partnership with Sub Sahara, and the guest list reads like a roll call of the people who built the sound of modern electronic music.
Likers of Things

First up is Johannesburg, on Friday 15 January, at Carfax. The Newtown complex has anchored the city's independent creative and nightlife scene since 1995, which makes it a fitting host. Daniel Avery, Desiree, HAAi and Midland will play, joined by local artists still to be announced.

The headline here is how many of these names are new to us. Avery, the British producer behind the acclaimed Drone Logic album and the Phantasy Sound label, makes his South African debut, as do HAAi and Midland. Avery has been part of the fabric story for over a decade and released FABRICLIVE 66 in 2012. Midland, who delivered FABRICLIVE 94 in 2017, is known for eclectic, unpredictable sets that roam across house, techno and electro. HAAi, Australian-born and London-based, is famous for refusing to stay inside one genre. "My first time in South Africa and what better way than with the fabric family. I'll see you down the front," says Avery.

Then there is Desiree. Born and raised in South Africa, she has built her name in London's house and techno scene and runs her own platform, MMINO. With an increasingly international schedule, she rarely plays Johannesburg, so this one is a homecoming worth marking in the diary.
The following night, Saturday 16 January, the party moves to Cape Town's Castle of Good Hope for the second year running. The 17th-century fort will be dressed in fabric's touring visual show, using large-scale projection mapping across its walls and courtyards. Avery, HAAi and Midland headline again, joined by Heidi, the house and techno pioneer whose career runs from Phonica Records to the Jackathon parties and BBC Radio 1. Last year's Castle edition sold out, so hesitation is not advised.

Tickets: From R250. Johannesburg: dosh.ly/fabric-johannesburg. Cape Town: dosh.ly/fabric-cape-town. The Cape Town local line-up will be announced soon.
