NH Johannesburg Sandton : New Era of Business Glamour
There's a particular kind of Sandton energy reserved for ribbon-cuttings, and NH Johannesburg Sandton brought all of it on 16 July when it officially unveiled the first phase of its extensive property transformation a full reimagining of its meetings and events facilities, headlined by a completely reborn 800-seat Baobab Ballroom.
Likers of Things

Don Jesseman, General Manager of NH Johannesburg Sandton, was joined by Alexi Cavaleros, Head of International Acquisitions at The Cavaleros Group, and Nico Vivier, Regional Director of Operations and Development for Africa at Minor Hotels, to cut the ribbon on what is quietly one of the most significant hospitality upgrades Sandton has seen in years.
The numbers alone tell a story of ambition: thirteen meeting and event venues refreshed, an 800-seat ballroom rebuilt from the ground up, and ten dedicated meeting rooms overhauled with state-of-the-art audio-visual and digital infrastructure. The design leans into geometric elegance and clean, contemporary finishes, the kind of aesthetic that photographs as beautifully at a gala dinner as it functions at a Monday-morning boardroom pitch.
This isn't a cosmetic refresh. It's the first chapter of a much larger transformation for the hotel, which spent decades as the Hilton Sandton before joining the Minor Hotels portfolio under the NH Hotels & Resorts brand. The renovation, which kicked off in April and wrapped in June, was executed in careful phases to keep the hotel fully operational , no small feat for a 329-room property in the middle of Africa's richest square mile.
And there's more to come. The next stage of the transformation turns to the guest rooms themselves, with all 329 due for a refresh that promises modern interiors, upgraded in-room technology and finishes befitting the NH Hotels & Resorts name. As Jesseman put it on the night, this ballroom debut is "just a small taste of what is to come" for the property.
It's a strong signal of where Sandton's hospitality scene is heading less about simply having a five-star address near the Gautrain and the JSE, and more about creating spaces flexible enough to host everything from product launches to large-scale conferences without ever losing their polish. For event organisers scouting their next big Johannesburg moment, the Baobab Ballroom just became very hard to ignore.
NH Johannesburg Sandton is located at 138 Rivonia Road, Sandton, a short walk from Nelson Mandela Square and the Sandton Gautrain Station.
