Nespresso's Vertuo World lands in Joburg

Nespresso's Vertuo World lands in Joburg

Between 7 and 10 August, the ground floor of Sandton City stopped smelling like shopping bags and start smelling like freshly pulled crema.

Likers of Things

Nespresso set up camp with Vertuo World, its global campaign fronted by Dua Lipa, and for four days Johannesburg's most fashionable mall corner became a fully caffeinated playground.

The premise, in true Nespresso fashion, was simple but staged with flair: coffee isn't a routine, it's a mood. And Vertuo World was built to prove it. Visitors moved through a series of styled zones, each one built around a different way of taking your cup hot, iced, indulgent, minimal with baristas on hand serving up recipes you won't find on a regular menu. Think loaded iced lattes, playful flavour twists and the kind of sculptural coffee moment that was made for a phone camera.

At the centre of it all sat the real star of the show: the all-new Vertuo Up, Nespresso's latest machine, officially arriving in South African homes this August. It's the brand's slickest release yet a three-second heat-up, a dedicated Coffee Creation button for bolder milk-based and over-ice pours, and a redesigned lever that makes the whole ritual feel more like a gesture than a chore. Powered by Nespresso's Centrifusion™ technology, the machine reads each capsule and adjusts the extraction accordingly, so the crema on top is never left to chance. With access to more than 50 coffees, it's less a machine and more an invitation to keep exploring.

That word exploring is really what Vertuo World is selling. The campaign, and the pop-up that brought it to life at Sandton City, taps into a shift Nespresso has been watching closely: coffee culture in South Africa is no longer just a morning obligation, it's a form of personal expression. Iced lattes by the pool, slow ritual brews on a Sunday, an afternoon pick-me-up that doubles as a treat the Vertuo Up was built with all of it in mind.

It's a fitting local touch that Dua Lipa now fronts the global campaign, taking over from George Clooney after two decades as the face of the brand. Her presence threads through the pop-up's visual identity, developed with creative agency Leo Constellation all clean lines, bold colour and a sense of playfulness that felt right at home in Sandton.

For the shoppers who wandered in expecting a quick espresso and left with a full sensory detour, Vertuo World did exactly what it was designed to do: made coffee feel like an event again.

The Vertuo Up machine is available now at Nespresso boutiques across South Africa, including the Sandton City store.
