Moët & Chandon's Harvest Experience Welcomes Thebe Magugu to Champagne

Epernay, France - There are few moments in the wine world as quietly electric as harvest. It is the culmination of a year's patience compressed into a matter of days when soil, sun, and human instinct must align perfectly, or not at all.

Likers of Things

This September, Moët & Chandon opened the doors to that moment once again, welcoming South African fashion designer Thebe Magugu to Champagne for the second edition of its Harvest Experience an intimate, immersive journey from grape to glass that has quickly become one of the Maison's most anticipated annual rendez-vous.

Joining Magugu was Lerato Tshabalala of Your Luxury Africa, there to chronicle the experience for a discerning African luxury audience a signal, perhaps, of how global the language of Champagne has become, and how eager its great houses are to speak it in new accents.

This year's harvest carries unusual weight. Moët & Chandon's 283rd vintage began on August 14th the earliest start ever recorded in Champagne's history following a growing season marked by punishing frosts and relentless heatwaves. Yields were limited, but early analysis points to something rarer than abundance: exceptional grape health, remarkable sanitary quality, and a balance of maturity that hints at a vintage of genuine distinction.

It is a reminder that luxury, at its finest, is never manufactured, it is coaxed from conditions no one can fully control.

The Harvest Experience is less a tour than a pilgrimage through the Maison's 280-year legacy. It began in Moët & Chandon's historic vineyards near the Loge Montaigu acquired in 1811 by Jean-Rémy Moët where Estate Manager Reynald Loiseau offered guests his first impressions of the 2026 vintage.

From there, the journey traced the grape's own transformation: to the Oiry pressing canter, where fruit becomes juice; to the Mont Aigu winery, where Winery Manager Daniel Carvajal guided guests through the alchemy of fermentation, offering a rare taste of the wines before blending. A picnic followed at Fort Chabrol the Maison's first Research Centre, founded in 1900 and now UNESCO-listed before the experience closed in the storied cellars of the Galerie Impériale, where centuries of savoir-faire rest in quiet darkness.

"The energy of the harvest has to be experienced to be fully understood," reflected Loiseau. "It's when an entire year of observation, care and precision comes together."

Fort Chabrol is also home to Natura Nostra, Moët & Chandon's ambitious biodiversity initiative. The program is building ecological corridors across Champagne 85 kilometers of hedgerows planted to date, in collaboration with 2,300 partner winegrowers who receive support from environmental assessments to funding. The effort extends well beyond aesthetics, reinforcing water preservation and soil health across a landscape that has carried UNESCO World Heritage status since 2014.

It is a quiet but deliberate statement: that true luxury houses now measure their legacy not only in centuries, but in ecosystems.

If the vineyard offered precision, the table offered emotion. This year's guest of honour, Academy Award-winning actress Jessica Chastain, joined the harvest before hosting an evening at the Château de Saran alongside Cellar Master Benoît Gouez one of the Maison's most storied private residences.

Executive Chef Jean-Michel Bardet composed a menu built in dialogue with the wines themselves, each dish tuned to the aroma, texture and character of cuvées spanning Brut Impérial to Grand Vintage and Collection Impériale.

"Behind every cuvée, there is precision and passion, and the desire to create wines that move people," said Gouez. "At the Château de Saran, the table becomes the place where this collective work is shared."

Now in its second year, the Harvest Experience has evolved from a single moment of celebration into something closer to a philosophy proof that heritage, when tended with the same care as a vineyard, only deepens with time.

Step into the harvest. Experience the Maison. Share the moment.
