Dancehall royalty is heading to Pretoria. Grammy Award-winning artist Sean Paul will bring his South African tour to Sun International's Sunbet Arena at Time Square this December, with the Pretoria date standing as one of only three stops in the country, alongside Cape Town and Durban.

As Kanye Nawe – Alongside You draws to a close in Cape Town on 10 September, visual activist and photographer Zanele Muholi turns to the global stage with a significant new exhibition. On Saturday, 12 September, Hlanganani – Unite opens at Galerie Ron Mandos in Amsterdam, presented alongside the Muholi Art Institute even as Kanye Nawe lives on through a series of online talks connecting audiences in South Africa with those abroad.

Brand collaborations tend to follow a predictable script: a logo swap, a limited can design, maybe a co-branded playlist. Windhoek Lager's new partnership with veteran South African band 340ml skips that script entirely and does something much stranger and more memorable for the length of the campaign, the band is temporarily changing its name to 330ml.

Some event lineups are built by chasing whoever's available. Others are built with intent and The Source Collective's October announcement is firmly the latter. Landing at Sognage on Friday, 9 October, the Afro Tech night has assembled a bill that reads less like a list of DJs and more like a curated survey of where deep, emotive electronic music in South Africa currently sits.

Talent competitions are easy to launch and notoriously hard to make matter — the real test isn't the crowning of a winner, it's what happens twelve months later. For The First Note, Y's smartphone-only, strictly digital talent search, that test has just been passed. Season 1 winner Langa King has released his debut single, "Heaven," an Afro-House track that suggests the platform picked correctly.

Some musical legacies calcify into nostalgia performed the same way, for the same audience, indefinitely. Joburg Theatre's new production explicitly refuses that path. Caiphus Semenya Songbook, running from 18 to 20 September, is built on the premise that the way to honour a legendary songbook is to keep reinterpreting it, not preserve it in amber.
