The Flame Has Landed in Stellenbosch

Nando’s has officially lifted the curtain on its landmark new restaurant in Stellenbosch’s historic Woodmill precinct, offering an elevated fusion of flame-grilled dining, local craftsmanship, and relaxed Winelands living.

Framed by surrounding mountain views and lush greenery, the flagship space has been thoughtfully designed as a lifestyle destination a place that invites patrons to slow down and linger long after the last meal is finished.

Rooted in its surroundings, the architecture seamlessly balances Stellenbosch’s historical heritage with the precinct’s industrial origins. Warm terracotta tones, raw textures, and a striking central rooflight flood the space with natural warmth. The restaurant features a full-service bar and a bottomless refreshment station stocked with signature PERi-PERi sauces, soft serve, and RUBRO iced tea. For those on the move, a customised drive-thru experience features a dramatic viewing window, granting guests a front-row seat to the artistry and theatre behind every flame-grilled order.

Artistic expression remains central to the brand’s identity. Greeting visitors at the entrance is Aquifer, a monumental 9-metre-long mosaic by acclaimed South African artist Clive van den Berg. Crafted over 6,000 hours alongside ten artisans from the Spier Arts Academy using nearly 50,000 hand-cut pieces of stone, ceramic, and glass, the installation marks a full-circle reunion 15 years after Van den Berg created Coming to the City for Nando’s King’s Cross in London.

The opening also served as the official launchpad for the new limited-edition Siya Sauce, developed in collaboration with Springbok captain Siya Kolisi and available in Nando's restaurants nationwide. Accentuated by live performances from DJ and artist Hluma Shoko (@not_a_she) via the Bridges for Music platform, the new location reinforces Nando’s decades-long legacy of championing local creative talent.

If there is one thing KwaZulu-Natal’s premier coastal playground understands, it is the art of the seamless day-to-night transition. From sunrise espresso runs along the promenade to late-night sundowners cooled by the Indian Ocean breeze, Umhlanga Ridge has long been the pulsating heartbeat of Durban’s cosmopolitan lifestyle scene. Now, that pulse just got a serious acceleration.

There is an unwritten, sacred law etched into the culinary identity of Tshwane street food: a Kota or Sphatlo without cheese is nothing more than a hollowed-out quarter loaf of white bread nursing an identity crisis.

If there is one universal truth about South Africans, it’s that nobody Decembers quite like us. As the country shifts into warm end-of-year gatherings, family braais, and long table lunches, Nando’s has just thrown a fresh and surprisingly mild curveball into our national festive menu.

"Much of my work is made as part of my attempt to deeply immerse myself in the natural world, to dissolve the line between my body and nature. I spend as much time as I can in forests or on the top of mountains, often grinding the rocks I find there into powder to make paint, then making a painting of the mountain, forest or field with its own substance." -Jonathan Freemantle

There was a time when inflight dining was regarded merely as functional sustenance—a necessary pitstop between departure gate and destination. But in the contemporary luxury travel landscape, the modern jetsetter demands that the journey itself mirrors the refinement of a Michelin-starred boutique hotel.
