Oakley expanding its retail footprint by opening a new store in Sandton City

The performance-eyewear icon has opened its second South African apparel store, choosing the country's most style-conscious postcode for the occasion. Here is why it matters, and what the brand is betting on.

Likers of Things

Oakley has opened its second South African store, this time on Johannesburg's home turf. The brand's Apparel, Fashion and Accessories (AFA) concept launched at Sandton City, following the debut of its first standalone AFA store at Cape Town's Canal Walk earlier this year.

The timeline tells the story. Two prime retail addresses in a single year is no tentative toe in the water; it is a brand that has studied the South African consumer closely and liked what it saw. Behind the move is EssilorLuxottica, the global leader in the design, manufacture, distribution and sale of fashion, luxury and sports eyewear, which describes the opening as the next step in building Oakley's AFA footprint across the country.

Most of us know Oakley through its eyewear: the wraparound frames worn by the world's fastest athletes, the lenses engineered to shrug off glare, speed and sweat. Less widely known is that the same engineering mindset runs through everything the brand makes for the body.

Oakley's apparel follows the performance-driven approach of its eyewear: innovation first, durability a given, and function built into every seam. It is clothing designed for people who move and expect what they wear to keep up. The Sandton City store brings the full apparel, fashion and accessories collection to Gauteng for the first time.

The brand describes the result as technical performance paired with modern, street-inspired style. In plain terms, this is kit that earns its keep on the trail or the training floor, yet holds its own over a long lunch on Nelson Mandela Square.

Sandton City is no random pin on the map. One of Johannesburg's premier shopping destinations, it sits at the heart of a district that is part financial capital, part fashion parade. That mix is precisely the point.

Oakley's brand philosophy centres on understanding the modern mobile lifestyle: the person whose day runs from an early session to a late meeting to a weekend somewhere with better air. Sandton has that person in abundance. These consumers value both style and function in their daily routine, and see no reason to choose between the two.

"Following the success of our first AFA store in Cape Town, Johannesburg was the natural next step. Sandton's blend of business energy and style-conscious consumers makes it an ideal home for the brand," says Sade Anter, Marketing Manager at EssilorLuxottica.

Anter is clear that the second store is as much about reach as retail. "This second opening shows our commitment to bringing high-quality, performance-driven products to active consumers across South Africa, not just in one city."

Read between the lines and this is a statement about South Africa as much as about Oakley. Global brands often test a market with a single store, then wait. Oakley opened in Cape Town, watched the response, and moved on Johannesburg within the year. Canal Walk built the momentum; Sandton City is where it compounds.

For Gauteng's active set, from trail runners and cyclists to the gym-at-six, golf-at-nine crowd, the full Oakley wardrobe is finally within reach without a flight to the coast. For the brand, it turns a single-city presence into a national one, with the country's two largest cities now covered and, if the pace of the past year is any guide, more to come.

Oakley has always made gear for people who don't slow down. It is fitting, then, that its South African expansion isn't slowing down either.
