In South Africa’s rapidly evolving media ecosystem, corporate boardrooms have traditionally dictated consumer trends from the top down. But every so often, a cultural movement emerges from the grassroots, completely disrupting the status quo.

Enter MacGyver ‘MacG’ Mukwevho and the Podcast and Chill family, who have officially bridged the gap between digital content and physical retail with the launch of Chillers Lager.
Following the successful rollout of Chillers Punch, Chillers Lager represents a milestone for independent black media ownership in South Africa, a premium beer born not out of focus groups, but out of years of direct requests from a hyper-dedicated community.
To mark the occasion, the Podcast and Chill network eschewed traditional corporate press events in favor of a community celebration at Katy’s Palace in Kramerville. The venue was transformed into a living gallery where walls were draped in actual social media comments from fans documenting the multi-year journey from a studio podcast to a lifestyle brand.

Demonstrating the raw fandom that defines the Chillers movement, die-hard fan Sello Mokgotho made the ultimate commitment during the exhibition, getting a fresh Chillers Lager tattoo inked directly onto his arm live at the event.
Taking to the stage, MacG spoke candidly about the steep barriers to entry within South Africa’s brewing industry, which remains heavily dominated by legacy conglomerates. When domestic manufacturing doors remained closed, the team looked west to Namibia, securing a partnership with a legendary brewery steeped in over a century of German brewing tradition.
"We never set out to make a beer. The Chillers asked for it, again and again, so we went and built it properly," explained MacG during his address. "Plenty of people told us it couldn’t be done, and that’s exactly why we did it. This is a premium lager the Chillers can be proud of."
Hosted by veteran broadcaster Macfarlane Moleli, the launch night seamlessly blended cultural lineage and high energy. Poet Vus’umuzi Phakathi opened proceedings by reciting the Izithakazelo (clan praises) of the Chillers community, while Sol Phenduka and MacG closed out the night behind the decks.
Chillers Lager is now available nationwide in 500 ml cans at Ultra Liquors, Pick n Pay, and Makro Liquor outlets.
