Durban’s House of Mirrors (Museum of Illusions)

Durban has always been a city of vibrant sensory overload, but the new Museum of Illusions at Gateway is taking that reputation literally.

Likers of Things

Durban has always been a city of vibrant sensory overload, but the new Museum of Illusions at Gateway is taking that reputation literally. As of April 2026, Durban joins the elite ranks of New York and Dubai, hosting a space where the laws of physics seem to take a lunch break.

For the academics and the curious-minded, the museum is a fascinating playground of psychology and geometry. It proves, quite hilariously, that our brains are "confidence machines" they make split-second assumptions about reality that are often completely wrong.

What to expect:

  • The Tilted Room: A masterclass in vestibular confusion. Your eyes see a level floor, but your inner ear insists you’re on a 20-degree incline.

  • The Clone Room: Ever wondered what a boardroom meeting with five versions of yourself would look like? Now you can see it (and photograph the existential crisis).

  • The Infinity Room: A hypnotic chamber of mirrors and LED lights that offers a brief, shimmering escape from the mundane.

This isn't a "shushing" museum. It’s loud, it’s interactive, and it’s the perfect antidote to a week of spreadsheets.

Venue: Gateway Theatre of Shopping, Umhlanga.

Hours: Mon–Thu (9 AM–8 PM) | Fri–Sat (9 AM–10 PM).
