Decorex Africa Outlines Festive Trends

This season, festive entertaining moves away from prescriptive tradition in favour of rich personal narratives, unexpected colour palettes, and expressive design.

Likers of Things

Decorex Africa has brought together leading trend authorities and creative visionaries including Woolworths Home, @home, Babylonstoren, Poetry, Cocoon Lifestyle, and culinary studio Food, I Love You to unpack the aesthetic ideas shaping gatherings this holiday period

Colour takes centre stage through deliberate contrast and botanical grounding. Creative Executive Johan Van Der Merwe of Poetry advocates for season-defying combinations, pairing rich tomato reds with soft pinks, butter yellows, and earthy olives. Babylonstoren’s A Garden of Gifts collection echoes this natural alignment with embroidered linens and leafy green tones, while Mpho Phalane of Food, I Love You introduces dramatic tonal tablescapes built around deep ochres, terracottas, and charcoals.

Phalane’s concept of "edible architecture" transforms the dining surface into an interactive canvas where food doubles as decor. Pillars of artisanal bread, hand-sculpted butter, and woven sprigs of rosemary create shareable centrepieces that bridge the gap between landscape and meal. In parallel, Bilala Mabuza of Cocoon Lifestyle approaches table setting like curating an art gallery, layering handcrafted ceramics and sculptural forms to spark dialogue.

On the decoration front, Decorex Executive Creative Directors Garreth van Niekerk and Alan Hayward highlight global shifts toward local craft and playful maximalism dubbed 'Craftmas' and 'Neo Deco'. Handcrafted ornaments, inherited textiles, oversized bows, and bold pairings of checks against polished chrome offer a tactile reminder of human connection. Modern entertaining is further elevated through ambient lighting, statement tableware, and signature home fragrances, creating warm, sensory environments tailored to bringing people together.

If there is one thing KwaZulu-Natal’s premier coastal playground understands, it is the art of the seamless day-to-night transition. From sunrise espresso runs along the promenade to late-night sundowners cooled by the Indian Ocean breeze, Umhlanga Ridge has long been the pulsating heartbeat of Durban’s cosmopolitan lifestyle scene. Now, that pulse just got a serious acceleration.

There is an unwritten, sacred law etched into the culinary identity of Tshwane street food: a Kota or Sphatlo without cheese is nothing more than a hollowed-out quarter loaf of white bread nursing an identity crisis.

If there is one universal truth about South Africans, it’s that nobody Decembers quite like us. As the country shifts into warm end-of-year gatherings, family braais, and long table lunches, Nando’s has just thrown a fresh and surprisingly mild curveball into our national festive menu.

"Much of my work is made as part of my attempt to deeply immerse myself in the natural world, to dissolve the line between my body and nature. I spend as much time as I can in forests or on the top of mountains, often grinding the rocks I find there into powder to make paint, then making a painting of the mountain, forest or field with its own substance." -Jonathan Freemantle

There was a time when inflight dining was regarded merely as functional sustenance—a necessary pitstop between departure gate and destination. But in the contemporary luxury travel landscape, the modern jetsetter demands that the journey itself mirrors the refinement of a Michelin-starred boutique hotel.
