TOWN- The Musical
15 March 2018 | Written By Tshepiso Maleswena
It seems jazz is the theme of the month with the Orbit celebrating their 4 Year Anniversary in a showcase of performances throughout the week and the latest showcase being the jazz musical called TOWN which kicks off at the Market Theatre this evening.
TOWN is inspired by the similarities between South African Jazz music from the cultural phenomenon of Sophiatown, and the era of Motown. TOWN is an entertaining and brilliant showcase of the musical parallels between the music Motown and Sophiatown era in the late 1950’s.
This musical is a beautiful blend for those that love jazz and those that love theatre. And if you love jazz and theatre in equal measure then this will be a treat for you. This production is heaven to the ears of the music lover and appreciator with original compositions as well music taken directly from Sophiatown and Motown. Think Winston Mankunku Ngozi meets Marvin Gaye, add an underlying depiction of the civil rights movement juxtaposed against apartheid in South Africa and you have a creative and moving tale of the role music played and continues to play in our society. Perhaps the best thing about this production besides the acting and the music is the fact that it is performed by an all-women cast. The six women are a mix of seasoned and some new faces to the musical theatre scene. They will all be presenting their brilliant capabilities to the world of theatrical performance.
The name is a play on words indicating the meeting of where SophiaTOWN meets MoTOWN. What we know about jazz music, in particular, is that it is characterized by improvisation and innovation so be sure to expect improvised tapestry to be weaved into the spirited performance. Under the youthful but brilliant musical direction of Michael Temba and overall direction of Lebo Toko, TOWN promises to take the audience on a nostalgic musical journey that has been given a fresh perspective by these two collaborators. For those of you that are avid theatre attendees, you will note that one of the directors Lebo Toko was recently a cast member in the hit musical, The Color Purple which was at The Joburg Theatre and is also a multi Naledi Award nominee. TOWN is an exciting and vibrant original South African project that showcases some of the best talents in performance and creative genius that this country has to offer. Performed with a live band, the experience will not only elevate audiences but also enlighten them whilst keeping them entertained with brilliant original compositions as well as golden oldies that have been rearranged and given a fresh perspective.
